What to expect

The DLR research project UAdapt develops advanced technologies for adaptive unmanned aircraft systems. A key component of this work is the flight dynamics simulation framework PyFDM, which is used for the development, testing, and validation of flight control algorithms before deployment on real aircraft. PyFDM provides a flexible environment for modeling aircraft dynamics, integrating new vehicle concepts, and evaluating novel control approaches in simulation.
Within this internship, you will contribute to the further development of the PyFDM simulation framework. Depending on your interests and background, the specific topic can be tailored to your expertise. Possible areas include the implementation of new aircraft models, the extension of visualization capabilities, the integration of Hardware-in-the-Loop (HiL) interfaces, or improvements to the software architecture. Your work will directly support ongoing research on autonomous flight control and adaptive aircraft technologies.

Your tasks

  • Extend and refactor the PyFDM flight dynamics simulation framework
  • Design and implement new simulation features based on your interests and qualifications
  • Improvement of the software architecture and maintainability
  • Validate and evaluate the implemented functionality
  • Document and present your results

Your profile

  • Currently enrolled in a degree program in Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field
  • Advanced programming skills in Python
  • Basic understanding of flight dynamics and aircraft modeling
  • Experience with software development and object-oriented programming
  • Knowledge of Julia is an advantage
  • Independent and structured way of working
